Lana Winters: "Hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome to LIVE! With Lana Winters, I am Lana Winters and I'm here today with Dean Matthews, from the hit series, Afterlife. Dean, thank you for taking the time out of your day to join us."
Dean Matthews: "It's my pleasure Lana, thank you for having me."
Lana Winters: "It's been a few months since we last spoke. So tell us all, what do you think now?"
Dean Matthews: "Now? I think the writers behind this show and the men and women who have brought it to life deserve all the credit in the world. MSS needed to hit one out of the park with it's debut show in order to set the stage for all the stuff it's going to be doing moving forward, and Afterlife did just that."
Lana Winters: "What was your time on set like?"
Dean Matthews: "It was amazing. To be honest, it was unlike anything else I've done. I did a lot of stuff like this, promotional shoots and the like throughout my career as a professional wrestler but it was nothing like this. As a professional wrestler it's one take and that's it usually but here? You have so much more range. So much more in the way of changes to improvise and shine."
Lana Winters: "What was the best thing about being on set and the shoot?"
Dean Matthews: "To be honest? It was the people. I thought that Michael and the other directors were wonderful at getting the shot that was needed but working with Sam and Jansen was something different. Watching the relationship between Jema and Jackson grow and seeing how Jackson viewed Gwen as a sister all in honor of his dead friend? That was amazing."
Lana Winters: "We saw that in the lead in to one of the episodes. Do you think that's why he treated Gwen like she was a kid? Even though she was in her mid twenties?"
Dean Matthew: "I do yes. To me, when Jax was exiled from the Titans after taking the blame for the VP's indiscretions with the President's wife Nolan was the only one who still talked to him. He was the only friend Jackson had left. That was special to Jax and when the world fell and Nolan died? Jax felt like protecting Gwen was the most important thing in the world."
Lana Winters: "Do you think she was more important to him than Jema was?"
Dean laughs softly.
Dean Matthews: "In a different way. Jema and Jackson had a fierce relationship, you could see it in that scene they had in episode two. They loved fiercely, and butted heads from time to time but him and Gwen? That was a different kind of love. A love that I think Gwen returned based on her reaction to what the Horde Queen does to him."
Lana Winters: "And we come to that. We all just saw it. Jackson brutally taken out by the leader of this army of the undead. She showed such amazing strength when she punched through a grown man's chest cavity and ripped his chest out. All while Gwen and Jema watched. How horrible do you think that was for them?"
Dean Matthews: "It's probably the kinda pain that none of us can even begin to comprehend, at least those on set. That's not a car accident or a illness. That is a horrible, violent, brutal death and to watch someone you love go through it? It's horrible. Jax wasn't just killed, he was killed slowly and that's the kind of thing that stays with you."
Lana Winters: "Will it effect them going into season 2?"
Dean Matthews: "Oh, I think so most definitely. Gwen isn't going to forgive Jema easily. I can see Gwen actually going as far as blaming Jema for it, and doing it so venomously that Jema begins to maybe believe it herself a little bit. She falls into the trap of, maybe I could have done more while Gwen may begin to act out. Lash out at everyone and put herself in dangerous situations."
Lana Winters: "What was it like? To look into your wife's eyes while that was happening?"
Dean laughs again.
Dean Matthews: "Oh good lord. I dunno what was more awkward for me. Shooting that sex scene with my pregnant wife on set or shooting that scene. We had to stay in character the whole time, so here is this woman who I love so much and I know is one of the nicest, kindest, sweetest women and she's got this...just emotionless stare on her face. And she's killing me slowly. Oh, it was all kinds of weird."
Lana Winters: "There was a moment at the end, after Jackson had fallen when Abigail and Vanessa were on the balcony firing the big guns when Abigail told Vanessa to leave."
Dean suddenly grinned and nods.
Dean Matthews: "Uh huh."
Lana Winters: "And one of the women who were with the Queen came up to the balcony. She and Abigail locked eyes and Abigail said the name "Chelsea". It seemed like she knew her."
Dean Matthews: "It did, yes."
Lana Winters: "And were you there that day of shooting?"
Dean Matthews: "I was, yes."
Lana Winters: "Did she know her? And if so, would that mean she knows all of them?"
Dean Matthews: "She knew someone who looked like her is all we know for sure. The woman with the ax looked like someone named Chelsea. Was it this Chelsea women? Only time will tell. As for the others? There is no sign one way or another. Maybe she does, or maybe she doesn't. Time will tell."
Lana Winters: "Fair enough. The finale saw all three communities destroyed. Cold Creek, Iron Lake and Hessberg were all completely obliterated by the Horde and the survivors are in a huge caravan moving further west out of the area. What do you think the future holds for them?"
Dean Matthews: "Well, I would imagine they are always gonna wanna stay moving to stay ahead of this horde they now know is behind them. Who knows what is gonna be beyond this horizon though? New threats? Familiar enemies? Old friends? Season 2 will tell us all that."
Lana Winters: "Last question Mr. Matthews. Do you think we'll see Jackson again?"
Dean took a moment to consider that.
Dean Matthews: "Well, Jackson Mawl isn't exactly gone is he?"
Lana Winters: "Meaning?"
Dean Matthews: "We all saw Jackson die, but we also saw him stand back up when the Queen did whatever that was. He became another member of the Horde. I have a feeling we'll see him again in that capacity."
Lana Winters: "That is a terrifying thought. Well Mr. Matthews, thank you for joining us today."
Dean Matthews: "It was my pleasure."
